Video is the hot topic on social media right now. Facebook posts with a video included have proven to yield much better results than posts with only a picture, or just plain text. Shooting a video doesn’t have to be intimidating, in fact almost all smartphones are capable of shooting high-quality videos without much user input.
Almost every smartphone comes equipped with a video camera app that is more than capable of getting the job done. You could download a 3rd party app if your phone does not have its own, but more than likely you are already ready to shoot as soon as you open the app.
Here are four important things to consider that can make your video look great
1) Orientation – One of the most important mistakes amateurs make is shooting video in “portrait” mode (or holding the phone vertically). Filming in portrait mode is okay if you are only planning on viewing it on your device, but anything else requires you to turn the phone horizontal and film in “landscape” mode. Social media posts are always viewed in landscape mode, so filming the correct way will help you avoid those black bars on the side of the video, and make it much easier to view.
2) Lighting – Although camera technology in smartphones has come a long way, many of them still struggle in dimly-lit places. The main thing to remember is to avoid back-lighting the subject of the video. In other words, make sure that the light source, whether natural or artificial, is in front of the subject and facing away from the shooter. If at all possible, try to use as much natural light as you can.
3)Audio – If the background sound is important, then it is imperative to find a suitable location to shoot your video. You will definitely want to avoid small enclosed spaces where sounds could echo, and you also want to avoid any sort of wind, because it will be picked up on the video and distract from your subject.
4) Stability – It’s extremely hard for beginners to hold a steady hand while filming video, but luckily many of today’s smartphones have some sort of image-stabilizing software built into the camera. It never hurts to use a small tripod or brace the camera against a fixed object if possible. Keep in mind that any time you move the camera; you shift the viewer’s eyes as well, so try to avoid panning or sudden movements to different angles.
Shooting video is fairly simple and straightforward. Most social media apps make it simple to upload your photos from your phone directly to the site, and most phones have a “share” button that allows you to send the video wherever you want it to go. With a little practice, you will soon be shooting high-quality videos of your own.
