With the holidays just around the corner we are all in “Holiday Mode.” Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in “Holiday Mode” all year long? This month’s featured florist does just that! Woyshner’s Flower Shop, a family owned and operated flower shop in Lackawanna, New York has expanded their business by adding a separate Christmas shoppe.
Here is a brief Q & A between our SCOOP director, Shelby Isaacson and Woyshner’s Flower Shop founder, Pat Woyshner.
Q: Why did you choose to expand to a Christmas shoppe?
A:Well, it felt like a natural progression for us. Prior to opening the shop, I spent 16 Chirstmases as a volunteer desinger at the White House. In 2000, my husband and I bought some property which included a big building that was originally used as a builder’s supply store. We didn’t know exactly what to do with it, because we already had the flower shop, so the first year we used just a small portion of it for a Christmas shoppe. It was such a hit that we’ve added on every year since then.
Q: Do you get Holiday shop customers year round?
A: We actually only have the shop open to the public from July to the end of January. Every year we have a “Christmas in July” sale to kick off the season. It is really fun. Then, the first weekend of November, Santa comes to the shoppe and we’ll do a special sale like “Buy 5 ornaments get the 6th free.” We also have local artisans come and sell their goods. In the past we’ve had a gentleman who sold buffalo ornaments as well as local authors.
Q: What marketing strategies do you use to promote your Christmas shoppe?
A: When my husband and I first started the Christmas shop in 2000, we did billboards all over town, but we don’t do that anymore because it was costly. I think they really helped in the beginning though. Now, a lot of it is world of mouth, the local newspaper, and letters to our house accounts.
Q: What do you think makes this industry special?
A: The people. They are always willing to support each other. I also love the constant evolution of the industry. We started our operation in 1960 with greenhouses and a small shop, now we have a flower shop and Christmas shoppe.
