Met up with Cal Boehme of America’s Florist the other day and we were reviewing the state of the industry and how the local florist is to survive. Cal has a beautiful flower shop in Bound Brook, NJ, was an industry leading florist and also ranked NUMBER 1 in the country. Not only was he an aggressive (HONEST) retailer, but he had (and has) his family operate a beautiful retail flower shop. As he is seeing declining corporate sales which they relied on so much, and a diminishing population, the question came up, “Where does a florist without tech go? How will they survive?” Cal also got me into RTI (which he uses) and I have to say, a solid POS system is the first step in running your business. Today’s customer expects to be spoiled with technology from any retail experience.
We discussed the heavy discounting and all the deception, as well as what the solution is. Marketing and SERVICE. We talked about the YES WE CAN program. We agreed that it is the difference between you and the national discounting. Add marketing to the equation and you will find a successful place in this industry.
When you remember that the product, in many cases, is the vehicle delivering a message, you will quickly realize that a shop with timely delivery and a YES WE CAN attitude will survive.
